Historical references are central to Gallagher’s work yet the work avoids reproduction. His research into the Elizabethan period is revealed through the symbolism of materials used and their configuration. Allegory; where objects act as coded messages, was utilised by the Elizabethans and were encoded by a learned elite. These messages, now obscured by time, are found in Gallagher’s work – he creates his own codes in his contemporary forms that respond to this material value. The fundamental focus of Gallagher’s inquiry, since the late 1980’s, has been to question the inherent value of materials and excess. Acrylic sealant and silicon are materials that dominated his work in recent years; is an example of this provocative exploration into material value. Are common and accessible materials that are used in domestic households less precious than gold? How is preciousness weighted-by scarcity or practicality? In current work he dyes pearls to look like plastic and uses large crystals as flashy stones. This work evokes ‘bling’- the ornamented accessories and flashy, costume jewellery that implied riches for the hip hop culture of the late 1990’s. The ‘fakery’ represented by bling is harnessed to promote the old adage ‘all that glitters is not gold’ encouraging the wearer to appreciate a piece for its design, narrative, concept and appearance rather than any material value it may hold. In juxtaposing materials such as gold and silicon together Gallagher questions the process of design. The materials he uses highlight aspects of the piece’s design over the value of the material. The object should be regarded for itself and not merely the material used. Gallagher, the alchemist, strives to make the precious common and the common precious.
