The importance and cultural relevance of jewellery and the hand crafted object is essential to me as an educator and jeweller. Plant motifs have been explored in jewellery for many centuries, especially in Australia in the nineteenth century. As an artist who has worked extensively from specific natural environments, I select individual specimens to highlight their unique form, cultural significance and sometimes threatened extinction. Jewellery has a privileged intimate association with the human body and has the capacity to signify more than the maker intended through its progressive passing from one person to another. I start with a close examination of plants always aware of shifting understanding and reading of nature as aligned with changing attitudes to Australian identity and the development of motifs that represent Australia. I express a specific vision and interpretation of the qualities of Australian light and landscape in my preferred medium silver. Marian Hosking
L’importance et la pertinence culturelle de la joaillerie et de l’objet fabriqué à la main sont essentielles pour moi en tant qu’éducateur et bijoutier. Les motifs végétaux ont été explorés en joaillerie depuis des siècles, en particulier en Australie au XIXe siècle. Ayant beaucoup travaillé dans des environnements naturels spécifiques, je sélectionne des échantillons uniques pour attirer l’attention sur leur forme, leur portée culturelle et parfois la menace d’extinction de l’espèce. Le bijou permet une relation intime privilégiée entre le corps et l’esprit de l’humain qui le porte. Il a la capacité de signifier au-delà d’une simple transmission d’une personne à l’autre. Je commence par un examen attentif des plantes et reste toujours en alerte sur ce que leur évolution et changements apportent à l’identité australienne, aux différents motifs qui la représentent. J’exprime une vision et une interprétation des qualités de la lumière et du paysage australien à travers mon support préféré : l’argent. Marian Hosking
