Pieter-Jan a étudié la flûte à bec avec Ricardo Kanji au Conservatoire royal de La Haye et le clavecin avec Bob van Asperen au Conservatoire Sweelinck à Amsterdam. Il a poursuivi une carrière florissante en tant que claveciniste, joueur de clavicorde, organiste, pianiste forte et joueur de flûte à bec.
Il a participé à de nombreux festivals internationaux, tels que le Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, le Berlin Musikfest, le Festival van Vlaanderen, le Festival Potsdam Sans Souci, le Bremen Musikfest et le Leipzig Bachfest.
Il donne régulièrement des récitals en solo et est également très sollicité en tant que joueur de continuo avec des ensembles tels que l’Orchestre du XVIIIe siècle, Camarata Trajectina, le Bach Collegium Japan, le Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam et la Netherlands Association Bach. travaille avec des chefs tels que Frans Brüggen, Ton Koopman, Masaaki Suzuki, Jos van Veldhoven et Philippe Herreweghe, entre autres. Belder a également accompagné des solistes tels que Johannette Zomer, Nico van der Meel, Harry van der Kamp, Sigiswald Kuijken, Rémy Baudet, Rainer Zipperling et Wilbert Hazelzet. Belder dirige son propre ensemble Musica Amphion.

En 1997, Pieter-Jan Belder a reçu le troisième prix au concours de clavecin du prix de la musique NDR à Hambourg. En 2000, il a remporté le concours de clavecin de Leipzig Bach. En 2005, il fait ses débuts comme chef au Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam. Depuis, il dirige régulièrement des productions avec des solistes tels que Michael Chance et Sarah Connolly (Dido & Aeneas) et la chorale Collegium Vocale Gent.
Il a réalisé plus de 140 enregistrements sur CD, la plupart en solo et de musique de chambre. Depuis 1999, Belder travaille à l’enregistrement intégral de la sonate pour clavier Scarlatti, sortie en 2007. Depuis, il enregistre le Clavier bien tempéré de Bach ainsi que l’ensemble des œuvres pour clavecin de Rameau et Soler. Brilliant a également publié un enregistrement de la série Kenner und Liebhaber de C.P.E. Bach, enregistré sur le pianoforte et le clavicorde ainsi que sur des concertos pour clavecin enregistrés avec son propre groupe Musica Amphion.
Belder a également enregistré plusieurs productions pour orchestre et musique de chambre avec Musica Amphion: Tafelmusik de Telemann, les œuvres complètes de Corelli, les concertos de Bach à Brandebourg, les concertos de Bach pour 2, 3 et 4 clavecins et la musique de chambre complète de Purcell. Il a également initié Bach in Context, une série de concerts et de CD, interprétant des cantates de Bach dans leur contexte thématique et dans lequel le répertoire d’orgue a également été incorporé. Cette série était en association avec Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam et était publiée sur l’étiquette Etcetera.
Pieter-Jan travaille actuellement sur l’enregistrement des œuvres pour clavecin de J.S. Bach, Dandrieu et le livre Fitzwilliam Virginal. Il a un duo réussi avec le violoniste baroque Rie Kimura avec qui il a enregistré C.P.E. Sonates de Bach pour violon du label Resonus.

Pieter-Jan Belder (1966) studied recorder with Ricardo Kanji at the Royal Conservatorium of The Hague, and harpsichord with Bob van Asperen at the Amsterdam Sweelinck Conservatorium. He has persued a flourishing career as harpsichordist, clavichord player, organist, forte-pianist and recorder player.
He has appeared at many international festivals, such as the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, the Berlin Musikfest, the Festival van Vlaanderen, the Festival Potsdam Sans Souci, Bremen Musikfest and the Leipzig Bachfest.
He regularly plays solo recitals, and is also very much in demand as a continuo player with such ensembles as the, The Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, Camarata Trajectina, Bach Collegium Japan, Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam, and the Netherlands Bach Society, and has been working with conductors such as Frans Brüggen, Ton Koopman, Masaaki Suzuki, Jos van Veldhoven and Philippe Herreweghe, amongst others. Belder has also accompanied soloists such as Johannette Zomer, Nico van der Meel, Harry van der Kamp, Sigiswald Kuijken, Rémy Baudet, Rainer Zipperling and Wilbert Hazelzet. Belder conducts his own ensemble Musica Amphion.
In 1997 Pieter-Jan Belder was awarded the third prize at the Hamburg NDR Music Prize harpsichord competition. In 2000 he was winner of the Leipzig Bach harpsichord competition. In 2005 he made his debut as a conductor in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, and was since then regularly conducting productions with soloists such as Michael Chance and Sarah Connolly (Dido & Aeneas) and the choir Collegium Vocale Gent .
He has made over 140 CD recordings, most of them solo and chamber music productions. Since 1999 Belder has worked on his integral recording of the Scarlatti keyboard sonatas, which was released in 2007. Since then he has recorded Bach’s Well-tempered Clavier along with the complete harpsichord works by Rameau and Soler. Brilliant also released a recording of the Kenner und Liebhaber series by C.P.E. Bach, recorded on the fortepiano and the clavichord as well as harpsichord concertos recorded with his own group Musica Amphion.
Belder has also recorded several orchestral and chamber-music productions with Musica Amphion: Telemann’s Tafelmusik, the complete works of Corelli, Bach’s Brandenburg concertos, Bach’s concertos for 2, 3 & 4 harpsichords, and the complete chamber music of Purcell. Also he initiated Bach in Context, a concert- and CD series, performing Bach cantatas in their thematic context, and in which also the organ repertoire was incorporated. This series was in corporation with Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam and issued on the label Etcetera.
Pieter-Jan Belder is currently working on recording the harpsichord works by J.S. Bach, Dandrieu and the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. He has a succesfull duo with baroque violinist Rie Kimura with whom he recorded C.P.E. Bach’s violin sonatas for the label Resonus.
Belder teaches baroque performance at the Musikhochschule in Lübeck, Germany.
