EARTHEN ADORNMENTS
Genesis 2:7 « And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. » It is the earth that not only provides us a place to live, but also air to breathe, water to drink and food to eat. No wonder Egyptian, Greek and Chinese mythology, the Qur’an and the Bible all mention the creation of man from clay. Ceramic jewellery is made from the same material that made us: most precious earth. We have been using clay to adorn ourselves with since the dawn of mankind. In my work I return to the function of clay as body adornment, but I use it in its fired state: ceramics. Instead of using massive beads, in each new collection, I try to find new ways to make ceramics supple and wearable. Using poured hollow elements contributes to a lighter weight and keeping them relatively small and/or the shape closed adds to their strength. In my latest collection I talk about my roots, the Netherlands: low-lying self made lands of clay reclaimed from the sea, lakes and estuaries. This collection -Earthen Adornments- is jewellery appropriate for a hard working people of growers, made from the rich soil they stand in, they depend on and they grow their crops on. The precious clay that made them. That made us. Peeter Hoogeboom

Peeter Hoogeboom
