Née à Kassel, Allemagne.
De formation classique, (elle remporte le prix de la ville de Munich), Anja collabore avec des musiciens de culture et d’horizons différents, en particulier avec des musiciens de jazz contemporain et des pianistes.Le champ musical d’Anja Lechner est exceptionnellement étendu et passe du concert solo avec orchestre (Orchestre de Chambre de Munich ou l’Orchestre de chambre de Tallinn), à la musique de chambre. Elle a ainsi travaillé avec le pianiste français François Couturier, la pianiste suisse Sylvie Courvoisier, le pianiste ukrainien Misha Alperin, le pianiste grec Vassilis Tsabropoulos (un album en 2000 « Chants, Hymnes et Danses » consacré à la musique du compositeur-philosophe Gurdjieff en tête des ventes classiques aux Etats- Unis), la violoncelliste Agnès Vesterman, la violoniste Patricia Kopatchinskaja, le clarinettiste Reto Bieri ou le guitariste Pablo Márquez ….
Une importante collaboration s’est nouée avec le joueur de bandonéon argentin Dino SALUZZI, tout d’abord avec le quatuor Rosamunde, puis en duo. Lechner a entendu Saluzzi pour la première fois au début des années 1980 à Munich, et a trouvé que « sa musique ne ressemblait en rien à ce qu’elle connaissait et était pourtant familière ». Son travail dans ce cadre consiste essentiellement à intégrer la culture de son partenaire, développer des techniques d’improvisation adaptées, et apporter sa propre culture classique.
Son travail est considéré comme particulièrement original et aventureux.

Anja Lechner performs as soloist with leading orchestras, as a chamber musician, and as creative participant in diverse projects between the genres. Composers who have written music for her range from Tigran Mansurian and Valentin Silvestrov to Dino Saluzzi. The scope of Lechner’s musical interests is reflected in a rich discography, with more than twenty albums to date on ECM New Series, the newest featuring music of Tõnu Kõrvits, whose compositions she has premiered with the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir under Tõnu Kaljuste. Other recent releases include Quasi Parlando, music of Tigran Mansurian, with Patricia Kopatchinskaja and the Amsterdam Sinfionietta, and Moderato Cantabile, featuring Lechner’s duo with Francois Couturier playing music of Gurdjieff, Komitas and Mompou. Lechner and Couturier also collaborate in the Tarkovsky Quartet, whose third ECM album is in preparation. Lechner’s ongoing projects include a duo with bandoneonist Dino Saluzzi, as well as duos with guitarist Pablo Marquez and with fellow cellist Agnès Vesterman. In recent seasons Anja Lechner has also emphasized solo cello concerts, playing old and new music, from Bach to Berio, and improvising.
Anja Lechner was born in Kassel, Germany, and studied with Heinrich Schiff and János Starker. For 18 years, until its disbanding in 2009, she was cellist of the Rosamunde Quartet.
