Depuis son installation à New York en 1979, Tom Rainey est un habitué des grands festivals et clubs à travers l’Amérique du Nord et l’Europe. Il s’est produit et/ou a enregistré avec John Abercrombie, Mose Allison, Julian Argüelles, Ray Anderson, Tim Berne, Jane Ira Bloom, Anthony Braxton, Nels Cline, Ted Curson, Kris Davis, Marc Ducret, Mark Feldman, Michael Formanek, Drew Gress, Barry Guy, Mark Helias, Fred Hersch, Andy Laster, Ingrid Laubrock, David Liebman, Joe Lovano, Tony Malaby, Albert Mangelsdorff, Carmen McRae, Mike Nock, Simon Nabatov, New and Used, Anita O’Day, Andrea Parkins, Herb Robertson, Angelica Sanchez, Louis Sclavis, Brad Shepik, Kenny Werner, Denny Zeitlin.
Il se produit également comme leader avec le Tom Rainey Trio (avec Ingrid Laubrock et Mary Halvorson) ou son quintet Obbligato (avec Ralph Alessi, Ingrid Laubrock, Drew Gress et Kris Davis).
Ses nombreuses participations en studio et le calibre des musiciens avec qui il a enregistré l’ont rapidement placé parmi les batteurs de renom identifiés de la scène de jazz créative new-yorkaise de la fin des années 1980 à aujourd’hui.Tom Rainey a enregistré en tant que leader,  «Pool School» pour le label Cleanfeed records en mai 2010,  puis trois autres albums sous son propre nom chez Intakt records en 2012, 2014, 2019 aux côtés d’Ingrid Laubrock et Mary Halvorson.  Il est également co-leader du trio Malaby/Sanchez/Rainey.

> Eng. Tom Rainey was born in Los Angeles, California in 1957. Since moving to New York City in 1979 he has performed at festivals and clubs throughout North America and Europe with a wide range of artists, including John Abercrombie, Ray Anderson, Tim Berne, Jane Ira Bloom, Ted Curson,
Marc Ducret, George Gruntz, David Torn, Mark Helias, Fred Hersch, Andy Laster, Joe Lovano, Carmen McRae, Mike Nock, Simon Nabatov, New and Used, Matthias Schubert, Tom Varner, WDR Big Band, Ken Werner and Denny Zeitlin.

Tom Rainey received an National Endowment for the Arts grant to compose and perform a concert of music for percussion and drums featuring Dave Samuels and Arto Tuncboyaci. Rainey’s voluminous recording credits and the artistic caliber of the musicians he’s supported would easily place him on the A-list of drummers closely identified with the New York City modern creative jazz scene roughly from the late ’80s onward.

Tom Rainey recorded his debut album as a leader, «Pool School» for Cleanfeed Records in May 2010. The CD also features Mary Halvorson on guitar and Ingrid Laubrock on saxophone.
