Né en France (1984). Vit à Amsterdam. Joris a commencé à jouer de la clarinette classique à l’âge de six ans, puis du saxophone alto à l’âge de douze ans. Il a été membre du Vienna Art Orchestra de 2005 à 2010. Joris a terminé ses études de maîtrise au Conservatoire d’Amsterdam en 2007 et a déménagé à New York en 2008. En 2016, Joris a commencé à enseigner la clarinette basse et la clarinette comme matières principales au Conservatoire d’Amsterdam. À partir de septembre 2018, il enseigne un nouveau Master en musique et philosophie: Freedom and Improvisation.
En 2001, il a remporté le prix Pim Jacobs. et en 2003, il a été le premier non-Américain à recevoir le prix IAJE Stan Getz / Clifford Brown Fellowship aux États-Unis. En 2004, Joris a reçu le premier prix du prestigieux concours Deloitte Jazz Award aux Pays-Bas. En 2008, il a été sélectionné pour le concours international de saxophones Thelonious Monk.
Joris a notamment joué avec Brad Mehldau, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Christina Branco, Lionel Loueke, ICP Orchestra, Han Bennink, James Carter et le Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. En 2010, Brad Mehldau lui a demandé de se produire avec lui au Carnegie Hall à New York et au Sanders Theatre à Boston. En 2015 et 2017, Joris a joué dans un nouveau projet de Mehldau avec violoncelle, piano et clarinette: musique écrite par Mehldau pour un film muet. À 16 ans, dans une émission télévisée néerlandaise, Joris a présenté l’introduction de la Rhapsody In Blue de Gershwin avec Orkest van het Oosten à la clarinette et a été présenté en tant que soliste avec le Jazz Orchestra Of The Concertgebouw.
En tant que leader, il a joué plusieurs fois au North Sea Jazz Festival, au Concertgebouw à Amsterdam, au Smalls Jazz Club à New York, entre autres. Depuis 2008, il tourne en Europe avec ses propres projets, notamment Aaron Goldberg, Ari Hoenig, Reginald Veal, Joe Sanders, Greg Hutchinson et Johannes Weidenmüller.
En 2007, il enregistre son premier album Introducing Joris Roelofs (Material Records). Joris joue également dans un trio dirigé par Chamber Tones, avec Jesse van Ruller et Clemens van der Feen. Ils ont sorti deux albums: Chamber Tones et The Ninth Planet, et se sont produits en Europe et en Asie. Joris a enregistré deux albums sur Pirouet Records avec son trio avec Matt Penman et Ted Poor: Aliens Deliberating (2014) et Amateur Dentist (2015).
En 2016, Joris a formé un nouveau duo avec le batteur légendaire Han Bennink. leur premier album Icarus vient de sortir. En tant que partenaire, Joris a joué dans de nombreux festivals et clubs de jazz internationaux, partout dans le monde. Joris started to play classical clarinet at the age of six and then started the alto saxophone at the age of twelve. He was a member of the Vienna Art Orchestra from 2005 – 2010. Joris finished his masters at the Conservatory of Amsterdam in 2007, and moved to New York City in 2008.
In 2016, Joris started teaching bass clarinet and clarinet as principal subjects at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. As of September 2018, he will be teaching a new Master Elective on music & philosophy: Freedom and Improvisation. In 2001, he won the Pim Jacobs Prize; and in 2003 he was the first non-American to receive the IAJE Stan Getz/Clifford Brown Fellowship Award in the US. In 2004, Joris was awarded with the first prize at the prestigious Deloitte Jazz Award competition in the Netherlands. In 2008, he was selected for the Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition.
Among others, Joris has played with Brad Mehldau, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Christina Branco, Lionel Loueke, ICP Orchestra, Han Bennink, James Carter, and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. In 2010, he was asked by Brad Mehldau to perform with him at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Sanders Theatre in Boston. In 2015 and 2017 Joris played in new project by Mehldau with cello, piano and clarinet: music written by Mehldau for a silent film.
In a Dutch TV show, at age 16, Joris performed the clarinet introduction of Gershwin’s Rhapsody In Blue with the Orkest van het Oosten, and was featured as a soloist with the Jazz Orchestra Of The Concertgebouw. As a leader, he performed several times at the North Sea Jazz Festival, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Smalls Jazz Club in NYC, among other places. Since 2008 he has been touring in Europe with his own projects including Aaron Goldberg, Ari Hoenig, Reginald Veal, Joe Sanders, Greg Hutchinson, and Johannes Weidenmüller. In 2007, he recorded his debut album Introducing Joris Roelofs (Material Records). Joris also plays in a co-led trio, Chamber Tones, with Jesse van Ruller and Clemens van der Feen. They released two albums: Chamber Tones and The Ninth Planet, and have performed in Europe and Asia. Joris recorded two albums on Pirouet Records with his trio featuring Matt Penman and Ted Poor: Aliens Deliberating (2014) and Amateur Dentist (2015).
In 2016, Joris started a new duo with the legendary drummer Han Bennink; their first album Icarus just came out. As a sideman, Joris has played at a large number of international jazz festivals and jazz clubs, all over the world. Joris also plays lead alto in the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and is a regular member of Reinier Baas’ projects. As a result of the North Sea Jazz composition assignment in 2016, Roelofs composed Rope Dance: music for bassoon, piano, drums and bass, based on Friedrich Nietzsche’s notion of the rope dancer in Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Joris has given two different lectures about the relationship between music and philosophy: Great Philosophers on Music and Nietzsche’s Muses.

Geboren in 1984 in Aix-en-Provence (Frankrijk), en opgegroeid in Amsterdam, speelt saxofoons, klarinet en basklarinet. Al op zestienjarige leeftijd trad hij op op tv, waar hij het klarinet-intro van Gerswins Rhapsody in Blue speelde met het Orkest van het Oosten. Ook was hij solist bij het Jazz Orchestra of The Concertgebouw. In 2001 won hij de Pim Jacobs Prijs. In 2007 studeerde hij af aan de masteropleiding van het Conservatorium van Amsterdam en in 2008 verhuisde hij naar New York.
In 2003 won hij als eerste niet-Amerikaan de Stan Getz/Clifford Brown Fellowship Award van de International Association Of Jazz Education (IAJE) in de Verenigde Staten. In 2004 won hij de eerste prijs van de prestigieuze Deloitte Jazz Award en in 2008 werd hij geselecteerd voor de Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition.
Joris heeft opgetreden met artiesten en ensembles als Brad Mehldau, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Christina Branco, Lionel Loueke, Lewis Nash, James Carter, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, WDR Big Band. Van 2005 tot 2010 was hij lid van het Vienna Art Orchestra. In 2010 werd hij door Brad Mehldau uitgenodigd met hem op te treden in Carnegie Hall in New York en het Sanders Theatre in Boston. In 2015 vroeg Mehldau hem deel uit te maken van een nieuw project met cello, piano en klarinet: nieuwe muziek gecomponeerd door Mehldau voor een stomme film getiteld ‘Salvation Hunters’ (Von Sternberg). Joris speelt ook lead-altsax in het Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw.
Als bandleider heeft hij verschillende keren opgetreden op onder andere het North Sea Jazz Festival, in het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam en Smalls Jazz Club in NYC. Sinds 2008 toert hij door Europa met zijn eigen projecten, waaronder Aaron Goldberg, Ari Hoenig, Reginald Veal, Joe Sanders, Greg Hutchinson, en Johannes Weidenmüller. In 2007 nam hij zijn debuutalbum op, Introducing Joris Roelofs (Material Records). Met het Chamber Tones Trio, met Jesse van Ruller en Clemens van der Feen, heeft hij twee albums uitgebracht: Chamber Tones en The Ninth Planet, en opgetreden in Europa en Azië. Joris’ cd Live At The Bimhuis kwam uit in 2011 en werd in 2012 genomineerd voor een Edison. In 2011 formeerde hij een nieuw trio, met Ted Poor en Matt Penman, waarin hij basklarinet speelt. Pirouet Records bracht hun album Aliens Deliberating uit in 2014. Hun tweede album verschijnt later dit jaar, ook bij Pirouet Records.
Als sideman heeft Joris opgetreden op een groot aantal internationale jazzfestivals en in jazzclubs over de hele wereld. Momenteel woont hij in Amsterdam, waar hij filosofie studeert aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam en klarinet doceert aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
